FDI Moot Shenzhen 2024 Launches an open Call for Arbitrators!

The China National Round of the Foreign Direct Investment International Arbitration Moot (FDI Moot Shenzhen), organized by the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration (SCIA), will be held on 27-28 July and 3-4 August this year. SCIA sincerely invites you to serve as an arbitrator for the FDI Moot Shenzhen and share your valuable experience with the teams!

    I. About the FDI Moot and the FDI Moot Shenzhen

The Foreign Direct Investment International Arbitration Moot (FDI Moot) has become the premier investor-State arbitration Moot. It is known as one of the “World’s Three Greatest Moot Competitions” together with the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot and the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot. The FDI Moot competition consists of a global round and several regional/national rounds, which share a common set of questions. Teams are required to pass the regional/national rounds to qualify for the global round.

The FDI Moot Shenzhen was launched in 2020 and is exclusively organised by the SCIA. Last year, the competition attracted nearly 300 students from 41 teams, and more than 300 legal professionals in the field of investment arbitration from 46 countries and regions acted as arbitrators.

II. Schedule of FDI Moot Shenzhen 2024

FDI Moot Shenzhen 2024 will simulate part of the real procedure of an international investment arbitration case: teams shall submit a Skeleton Brief in advance and then argue specific legal issues in English during Oral Hearings. 3 legal professionals with investor-State arbitration experience will form an arbitral tribunal for each hearing, to evaluate and score the teams’ performance.

The Oral Hearings are divided into two rounds:

    1. 27-28 July 2024

Online Preliminary Round: the hearings will be held via zoom, with remote access for arbitrators and teams. SCIA will provide technical guidelines and testing in advance.

    2. 3-4 August 2024

In-Person Elimination Rounds: The offline hearings will be held at the headquarters of the SCIA, the SCIA Tower, located in Qianhai, Shenzhen, China. The arbitrators and teams of the elimination rounds are required to come to Shenzhen to attend the hearings.
